Varian, Inc. complements its nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) probe
technology by acquiring Nalorac Corporation, a privately held company
based in Martinez, Calif. in February, 2002.
NMR is a unique tool that allows researchers to determine the three
dimensional structure of molecules. Probes are a vital component
of NMR instrumentation. They hold the sample under study and apply
radio frequency signals to each molecule. They then receive, in
real time, the signals that the molecule returns to the instrument
to allow scientists to determine the exact structure of the molecule
and its function. With increasing interest in the structure of biochemical
molecules (such as proteins), NMR spectrometers are key enabling
tools for drug discovery, DNA analysis, and human proteomic studies.
